How I Grew My Career and Leadership Skills at a Startup - The Muse
How I Grew My Career and Leadership Skills at a Startup - The MuseHow I Grew My Career and Leadership Skills at a StartupChoosing my career path after college came down to answering one particular question Should I work for a big company or a departureup? To me, one advantage of working at a large corporation would be the presence of carefully considered leadership development programs- programs that are put in place to groom the future leaders of the organization. As a result, coming in as a recent graduate, youre exposed to vast swaths of the organization and an immersive and comprehensive learning experience. This was an important factor in my decision-making process as Id pivoted away from my intended career path (neuropsychology research). By the time I realized I was truly passionate about building businesses, it was too late to change majors, and I knew that I would need to learn the foundations on the job instead of in the classroom. I, of course, was highly tempted by these l eadership development programs after I graduated- but at the same time, I was overwhelmed by the idea of working for an organization with tens of thousands of employees. Plus, the culture and ways of working seemed at odds with my ethos. I grew up around startups. Watching my parents build companies from the ground up gave me an unshakeable desire to do the same, and I knew that when the time came to start my own business (which was my main goal), I would need to understand the nuances of early-stage company growth. The challenge with that, of course, is that the quintessential startup experience is mora likely to include a kitchen outfitted with kombucha on tap than a structured and organized process for personal career development. This isnt to say that startups lack learning opportunities, nor that employees languish without these benefits. Startups are highly sought after because of the vast opportunities they provide to learn and thrive in an unstructured and yet-to-be-defined e nvironment. So, following my gut, I ultimately decided to begin my career working at a startup. Instead of waiting for my company to create a rotational leadership program for me, I invented my own version. I knew that if I chose the right startup and was strategic about how I navigated the space, I could leverage my experience to accelerate my personal career growth and set myself on a management trajectory. And it worked Three years later, Im the Product Director at Bionic, working closely with our leadership team to elucidate product development initiatives that add value to our Fortune 500 enterprise clients. Heres how I got here1. I Found a Startup in a High-Growth Space With a Small Team- and Used That to My AdvantageI knew two things walking into my role as an accelerator associate that the whole company was comprised of about 10 people, and that the field it would be in- helping enterprises avoid disruption by launching new products and making early-stage investments- was gro wing and evolving rapidly, as evidenced by the surge of books, articles, and consultancies in the space. Because there were a lot of unknowns, there were no formal processes for doing, well, anything. I saw this as a feature rather than a bug, knowing that I would be able to experience a lot of important setbacks and breakthroughs and have my hands in a lot of different projects. Problems would arise daily, and I treated each one as an opportunity to brainstorm a solution. And because of our size, it was perfectly acceptable for me to raise my hand and offer to help in an area of the business that had notlagehing to do with my role on paper. What mattered most to the company was that someone got it done. Being this person helped me garner trust among the leaders of the company, and because they trusted me, I would get invited to more meetings. And yes, at first, I was usually in those meetings to take notes or maybe make a slide afterward. But I was also able to listen in on some of the more important conversations that were happening- about our growth strategy, friction in our service delivery model, and disagreements on methodology. They were living and breathing learning moments, and I drank them up. This early exposure was critical in helping me to think more strategically as I took on more and more responsibility in the company.Want to Do What I Did? Read How to Land a Startup Job (Before Anyone Else Knows Its Available) 2. I Looked for a Group of Leaders (and Peers) I Could Learn FromI was fortunate enough to have met with nearly every single employee during my interview process (remember, there were only 10 people). In those meetings, I noticed how bright, articulate, and passionate about the mission each person was, and sensed that I could learn a lot from them- which further convinced me to take the job. As it turned out, I was right. By my second year, Id reported up to six different people at different times and worked closely with all (at this point , 30) employees. This meant that I also had the chance to work with all of the companys leaders and saw firsthand how they approached problem-solving, team-building, communication, and other critical elements of being a good leader. This helped define what kind of leadership style I wanted to (and would) take on later in my career.Want to Do What I Did? Read 22 Interview Questions Thatll Get You the Real Inside Scoop on Company Culture3. I Ignored My Job Description and Took a LeapThe company was rapidly growing, and so there were often times where we werent able to fill key talent gaps in time. Additionally, new roles were constantly emerging as we grew. These were precious moments when I was able to step up and think outside of my direct responsibilities. Ive watched plenty of other entry-level hires pull out their job descriptions as a reason not to do something. While I applauded their ability to say no, I knew one of the best ways I was going to grow was by forcing myself to tr y something new. And I knew the only way I would be able to prove that I could do something without prior experience was by actually doing it. Every single job Ive had at Bionic didnt exist before I identified it, pitched it, and took it on. For example, when we launched our account management team, I noticed a gap in resources and support. I raised my hand, pointed it out, and wrote up what responsibilities I thought someone would need to cover to fill this gap. Not only did I outline what ended up being a full-time job for me, but it also became a critical role inside the company, and we ended up hiring two additional people to do this work full time. In all of these cases, I took the time to understand the problem, and while I didnt always have the traditional expertise or resume to fill it, I had enough context about the business to add value and move us forward. Those moments allowed for immersive learning experiences, ultimately helping me to become more well-rounded and conne cted inside of the organization. Want to Do What I Did? Read 2 Easy Ways to Expand Your Role (Without Overstepping Your Boundaries)Joining a startup was the best decision I could have made for my career. It allowed me to contribute to and learn about literally every area of a business, from sales to product to account management to operations and back bro support. And within three years, Ive gone from an entry-level associate to a director- a leap almost unthinkable in other industries or at other companies. But perhaps most importantly, I picked up a valuable lesson about business and life that everyone should take note of Growth happens when aspiration meets opportunity. So do your research and choose wisely, and then get ready to roll up your sleeves.

10 Interview Questions to Answer If You Want to Be an HR Manager
10 Interview Questions to Answer If You Want to Be an HR Manager10 Interview Questions to Answer If You Want to Be an HR Manager So youve been in HR for a few years now, and youre eagerto move to the next level. Its no wonder - with 10,000+ jobs available and a median salary of over $86,000 , HR Manager is a highly desirable position (enough to have cracked the top five of our 2018 Best Jobs in America list). But of course, before you can enjoy the perks that come with the position, you need to actually get the job. As an HR expert yourself, you already know that the best way to do that is to brush up on your interview skills. Its always a good idea to prepare for the most common interview questions - but if you want to really wow the hiring kollektiv, youll need to go a step further and research interview questions that specifically speak to the role youre applying for.Check out these common interview questions for HR Managers that weve rounded up - as well as tips on how to answer them. Many people lean towards one management style in particular, and its perfectly fine to share that. But remember that as you move to a new company with a new culture and people to boot, whats worked for you in the past wont necessarily be the right choice. As one interview candidate notes, one has to adjust to each individual, and also adjust to the team as a whole. Describing your own personal management style while also indicating an openness to flexibility is key here.Increasingly, HR isnt just about administering benefits or settling employee disputes - its about driving business results through effective people management. To wow your interviewer(s), discuss the core initiatives youd implement at the prospective company, how you would meaaya success and how the initiatives wouldimpact the bottom line.Everyone has parts of their job they arent crazy about. However, its important to avoid coming across as overly negative or unwilling. If you do nt like recruiting for example, you shouldnt say I hate recruiting and leave it at that. Instead, you might want to say something more along the lines of Recruiting isnt my passion, but I know what an important role it plays to a companys success so I dont mind taking it on as one of my responsibilities. This question is important on a couple of fronts For one, it allows you to describe what you personally need in order to do your job successfully, which is important in determining whether or not the company youre interviewing with is the right fit. In addition, though, its also a good starting point for you to talk about how you would shape the workplace and company culture if given the job.In the HR field, you often have to make tough calls. One of those, unfortunately, is job eliminations, whether through layoffs or firing. That probably shouldnt be the first move you make (a performance improvement plan , for example, can be just what you need to bring an underperforming employe e up to snuff). But when that doesnt work out, or an employee does something particularly egregious, there comes a point when you need to let an employee go for the good of the company - and its important to communicate to your potential employer that you understand that. This question is frequently asked in interviews regardless of the role, but as a soon-to-be HR Manager, its especially important to demonstrate effective conflict resolution . Nail this question by describing the specific action you took to overcome a difficult situation, how you showed level-headedness and what the results were.Establishing and enforcing policies and processes is a key component of HR, but that doesnt mean they should be set in stone. In answering this question, youll want to talk about how and why deviating from the norm was the right decision, and how that impacted policies moving forward. Its not always easy to stand up for the right thing, but if youre in HR, its expected of you. You cant answ er this question simply by commenting on unethical practices that youve witnessed - you need to talk about a time when you saw something going wrong and took concrete action against it. If you dont have a relevant, first-hand experience to share, make sure to brainstorm a hypothetical scenario beforehand and think of how you would remedy the situation. This is another good opportunity for you to show off the ideas you have for the company youre interviewing with. Ask questions that demonstrate an understanding of the type of candidates they need and their current pain points. If the company strives to become more data-driven, for example, you may want to ask what experience the candidate has with reporting and analytics. Still drawing blanks? Try asking one of these oddball questions for a response recruiters wont soon forget - just make sure to justify why you think its valuableIf youve been in HR long enough, you likely have your own thoughts on where the industry is heading. However, it never hurts to show that you keep up with the latest industry research and findings. Cite information from your favoriteHR newsletters, trade magazines or conferences. A few trends that are supposed to be particularly important in 2018 artificial intelligence, transparency and lateral movements, says Glassdoor Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain .

3 Tips to Help You Win the Workplace Game of Thrones
3 Tips to Help You Win the Workplace Game of Thrones When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground. Cersei Lannister,Game of Thrones Thankfully, the stakes are not quite so high in the workplace failure does not lead to death. You can actually just move to another company if things go south.Still, though, you have to do afair bit of maneuvering in the workplace if you want to ascend the corporate ranks (which is pretty much the working worlds equivalent toCerseis game of thrones). To do that maneuvering successfully, youll need political expertise which may be just as important as, if not more important than, your technical skills. According to research from Florida State University professor PamelaPerrew, a person rarely gets promoted without having developed strong political skills.Whether you are an up-and-coming millennial or a maturing Generation X professi onal, understanding the political machinations of your workplace will be key to outwitting your peers and landing the promotions you desire.Of course, not everyone wants to move into management. But, if you do,and you are ready to win the workplace game of thrones, then here are three tips to help you climb the corporate hierarchy.1. Findan Influential MentorDuring your journey to the top, youll need toaccept some guidance from a benevolent power broker who has been there and done that, with respect to ascending the companys ranks. Seeking and accepting such guidance will accelerate your own personal development, improvingyour judgment and decision-making.It alsostands to reason that because your mentor isanexperienced member of the upper echelons of the company, they can act as a powerful political ally.Studies show that candidates who are recommended by influential people are much more likely to be invited to interviews and land jobs. If your mentor vouches for you, your chances o f landing the promotion you crave skyrocket. Similarly,a study carried out at Sun Microsystemsfound that employees who were mentored were promoted five times more often than employees who were not mentored.2. Get Noticed For the Right ThingsDo some of your peers seem to be the golden boys or girls of the company? Do these peers have a knack for getting noticed by senior managers and leaders?Thats because they know either by instinct or by paying attention to their surroundings what to do to get noticed in the firm. What makes someone a golden employee often depends on what the managers and leaders ata given company value, but one of the most commonly valued traits in employees is entrepreneurialism that is, the willingness to take risks, move out of your comfort zone, and take on projects outside of your job description. Being entrepreneurialalso involves spotting opportunities to improve some aspects of thebusiness and presenting potential improvementsto decision makers and influ encers. A study from Millennial Branding found 58 percent of managers are either very willing or extremely willing to support entrepreneurial employees, making entrepreneurialism a great way to get noticed at most companies.Another quality that impresses managers, according to the Millennial Branding study, is being a subject matter expert. Sixty-five percent of employers surveyed said subject matter expertise was important to career advancement. So, another great way to get noticed is to be able to give sound specialist advice at times when it is most needed.3. Hone Your Influencing and Impression-Management SkillsThe Millennial Branding study cited above found that managers often looked for soft skills when promoting millennials, rather than hard skills or digital tech savvy.Simply puttingyour head down and grinding it out is not enough you need to demonstrate your soft skills if you want to land a promotion.Professor Perrewof FSU outlines four skills that define political adeptnes s social astuteness, interpersonal influence, networking ability, and the ability to convey the impression of sincerity. Youll need to practice these skills and use them regularly if you are to succeed in the workplace games of thrones.

A Finance Resume Makeover
A Finance Resume MakeoverA Finance Resume MakeoverJan Jobseeker (name withheld for confidentiality) had a good professional background but her approach to the organization and content of her old resume was haphazard and very two-dimensional. She had outlined her basic job descriptions and then provided one achievement for each position. As we all know, you dont hold a job for seven years and only have one accomplishment to tout. Jan was leid selling the totality of the value she offered to employers.Expanding the ProfileThe first thing we did in the new resume was expand the profile section from one simple sentence to a more comprehensive description of her background and expertise. We also added a job headline, or branding line, for increased clarity and focus so recruiters would know immediately where she fits. Recruiters need to know what a client does straight away making them guess or being vague only hurts the impact of the resume.Enhancing SearchabilityIn addition to the new p rofile, we added a core competency section. This brought in relevant skills tischsets and functions to catch the eye of the reader and enrich the keywords for databases. These keywords were deliberately selected to make her background applicable to most industries, rather than creating a pigeonhole by focusing on a limited set of industries from her past experience. The order of the core competencies was given attention with more complex skills coming at the top of the section and less complex bringing up the rear.Using Qual Versus QuantThe content of the old resume was very passive and uninspiring. The single achievement for each position had been written in the verbose goal/action/result (berhaupt) style which did not work well for her content since much of it was qualitative in nature. The GAR style is rather outdated but when used, it is best with metrics. We switched the achievements to bullet statements and expanded them to show how she brought value to each position.Infusing Management Skills On the most recent position, we provided additional insight on major duties and highlights. The old resume, while stretching to three pages, was actually rather thin on meaty content. We placed emphasis on her higher-level management skills versus more hands-on (and less impressive) finance and accounting duties throughout the first two positions. The wording was also punched up by eliminating the passive voice and pulling in strong verbs and vivid descriptions.Organizing an Effective Hierarchy The education and licensures section on the old resume seemed jumbled in both its organization and appearance. We reformatted and reorganized the content to emphasize her MBA first and pulled the CPA into a category of its own. Notice we also removed the dates of the degrees since all were older than ten years.Trimming the TimelineThe employment timeline received a much-needed trim. Jan had gone all the way back to 1981 with her experience descriptions. We shaved off ten yea rs to keep the information as relevant as possible and to help her avoid being tagged for her age in the kontrolle stage.Re-formatting for SuccessThe formatting and visual appearance of the old resume was plain and inconsistent. For example, headers did not stand out to guide the reader through the document, and font styles varied. We created a much smoother, professional appearance and used bold to draw attention to key items such as job titles. Further, the dense paragraph format was shifted into a combination of text and bulleted statements. The old resume was a loose three pages but through selection of material and formatting, we brought it into a tighter, more organized design that was a full two pages. The end product is a much more attractive document that does a much better job of describing what Jan accomplished across the many years of her experience in financial management.

Papers Requested for Special Journal Issue on Additive Manufacturing
Papers Requested for Special Journal Issue on Additive Manufacturing Papers Requested for Special Journal Issue on Additive Manufacturing Papers Requested for Special Journal Issue on Additive Manufacturing The ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering is currently accepting manuscripts for a special issue covering additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, to be published in December. The deadline for submitting a paper for this special issue is April 15, 2014. Over the past few years, additive manufacturing/3D printing technology has had a major impact on the engineering design, driving the concept of distributed manufacturing, the decentralization of manufacturing capability from factories to offices and homes. Although AM technology is more than 30 years old, this increased public awareness has created a renaissance of both commercial and academic activity that is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Because of this renewed interest and the resulting expansion in AM research and development, the editors of ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering thought it wasappropriate to publish a collection of manuscripts that represent the breadth of current research in the field to stimulate further research. Y. Lawrence Yao, the editor of the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, is seeking manuscripts representing the broad field of AM/3D printing for this special issue of the journal. The guest editors for the Additive Manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing issue are Profs. Joe Beaman and Dave Bourell of the University of Texas at Austin, and Prof. Darrell Wallace of Youngstown State University and the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute. Specific topic areas of interest to the editors include, but are not limited to, AM machine design and performance; AM process control and sensing, including cyber-enabled AM; materials development, characterization, and performance; design for AM; validation, verification and qualification of AM parts; modeling and simulation of AM processes; micro-AM processes; infrastructure of AM and supply-chain impact of AM; sustainability issues in AM; 3D representation of solid objects and slicing algorithms; and bio-additive manufacturing. Papers should be submitted in electronically by April 15 directly to the journal at http://journaltool.asme.org. Study Eating during certain windows may reduce risk for cancer
Study Eating during certain windows may reduce risk for cancer Study Eating during certain windows may reduce risk for cancer The Endocrine Societyâs Annual meeting yielded some fascinating finds this past Saturday. Two independent studies in particular present strong data regarding the hormonal impact our eating schedule has on overall wellness.Adnin Zaman and her colleagues showcased promising research exploring how eating later in the day effects BMI and weight gain. An analyst of 31 overweight and obese adults provided further insight into the way our bodyâs ability to convert calories into energy diminishes as the day grows old, seeing us pack on fat more readily.Unfortunately, over-eating past dinner time might additionally come with graver consequences than an expanding waistline.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!According to the lead researcher behind a new study, Dr. Manasi Das, an adherence to a time-restricted diet can dramatically reduce your risk for breast cancer.Three studies, one astonishing conclusionIn the first study, mice were put on a 60% fat diet regiment in order to make them obese. After 10 weeks passed, they were split into two groups. One group was given access to food 24 hours a day while the other group was only permitted to eat in an eight-hour window period at nighttime (rodents are nocturnal thus the most active at night). Three weeks into their assigned diets, the mice were injected with breast cancer cells. The second study organized the genetically modified mice into two groups â" one group was given 24-hour access to food and the other was assigned time-restricted access to food.In the final study, mice that adhered to a low-fat diet were given either a saline control, or an insulin pump, and then examined against mice on a high-fat diet put on drugs meant to reduce insulin levels. An ultrasound scan of all the rodents involved in the three studies revealed that the time-restricted diet drastically slowed the rate of tumor growth in mice on a high-fat diet and lean mice alike. Dr. Das explains: âThe results suggest the anti-tumor effect of time-restricted eating is at least partially due to lowering levels of insulin, suggesting this intervention may be effective in breast cancer prevention and therapy.âLower insulin levels concurrently impede the speed of growth of cancer cells, in addition to slowing down the development of tumors.Itâs also important to note that the mice put on medication that decreased insulin levels (diazoxide), experienced a slower growth rate than mice fitted with an insulin pump. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Music critics feel ousted by the AI algorithmic culture of streaming
Music critics feel ousted by the AI 'algorithmic culture' of streaming Music critics feel ousted by the AI 'algorithmic culture' of streaming Traditionally, people relied on either friends or âexpertsâ â" music journalists or critics â" for opinions and advice on which new music to buy. In recent years, thatâs diminished rapidly, with the artificial intelligence of streaming programs designed to choose new music for you based on what youâve already listened to, or build playlists around your tastes. That leaves music writers and critics fighting for relevancy, recognition â" and jobs, reports Columbia Journalism Review. For music lovers, finding new music to listen to today is less labor-intensive than ever, writes Cherie Hu. While it once meant logging hours at dusty record stores, looking for listings in alternative newspapers, going to concerts,â now, âdiscovery can be as easy and passive as scrolling mindlessly through a personalized feed or shuffling an algorithmically curated playlist ⦠without help from a critic or other human guide.âItâs the recommendation aspect of algorithms that has been b ad for music critics, who used to be âconsumer guides,â are now relegated to the wayside as the artificial intelligence of the stream does all the work.To be fair, people have been lamenting the death of criticism since the internet was born, but streaming has constituted quite a shift for those who write about music. Many who find themselves out of work end up shifting careers, working in curation at streaming services.Liz Pelly, a contributing editor of The Baffler, recently tweeted that the transient nature of music and micro-trends popularized by âalgorithmic cultureâ makes criticism â" and even being allowed to write â" difficult. Music outlets have been shying away from âinvesting energy into reviews, interviews, editorial, writing in general ⦠and into âsessions,â âexperiences,â [and] playlists,â she Tweeted.Of course, there are other ways to look at it; some music publications have chosen to work with streaming services and see it as a new opportunity to spread influence. Many music publications, including Resident Advisor, and electronica magazine, are now curators on Spotify.

Y7 Studio Founder Sarah Larson Levey made yoga different with her class
Y7 Studio Founder Sarah Larson Levey made yoga different with her class Y7 Studio Founder Sarah Larson Levey made yoga different with her class There is no question that yoga can be super beneficial to your career. It can help you focus better, improve the way you interact with your coworkers, improve your work-life balance (and actual balance) and just make you a more enlightened person overall. But you know what? No matter how fun my yoga leggings are, sometimes it is just so boring after a long day at work to go sit in a silent or quiet room and try to put your foot behind your neck (and watch yourself fail at it in a giant mirror.) But Y7 Studio co-founder Sarah Larson Levey wanted to change the stereotypical image of yoga. After moving to New York at 22 to work in fashion she had been frustrated by the yoga classes available and feeling like they werenât fun or challenging enough. Starting with a small pop-up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn she and husband Mason Levey turned the idea of what a yoga class should be on its head. âI love music and movement. Yoga was something I was always drawn to but was turned off by the ex clusivity of the classes I was attending. Y7 is a combination of all the things I wanted to experience in a class,â Larson Levey told Ladders. There are no mirrors or bright lights or weird airy, flowy music in a Y7 class. It is just you, your sweat (from the infrared heat blast) and some truly bumpinâ beats (any workout class that includes Snoop Dogâs âDrop It Like Itâs Hotâ is good in my book.) Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and Beyonce are regularly in the music rotation. Youâll never be able to go back to regular yoga class again once you do crow position to Busta Rhymes and Mariah Careyâs âI Know What You Want.âClearly, people appreciated this new kind of yoga as after launching in only 2015 with the pop-up the brand will have 11+ studios by the end of 2018 (five studios opened this year alone) including two locations in LA and they are looking for a new President/COO. We spoke with the young founder about growing her brand and why yoga should be integrated into everyoneâs daily routine. On launching her own company, which she self-fundedTotally! I continued working at my corporate job for the first two years of Y7 - I always want to make sure I am able to take care of my people first and foremost. On building the brandWe would love to continue to grow in New York and LA as well as enter into new markets such as Chicago, San Francisco, Philly, and DC.On incorporating yoga into her work stream, especially on stressful daysOh gosh. My days are all so different. Lately, things have been really crazy and when I feel overwhelmed I always try to bring my focus back to my breath. Why everyone needs yoga in their lifeEveryone should! It not only strengthens your physical body but the practice truly builds a connection with the mind as well - giving healthy habits to take on and off the mat.

Spice Up Your Professional Summary with a Headline
Spice Up Your Professional Summary with a Headline Spice Up Your Professional Summary with a Headline Spice Up Your Professional Summary with a Headline You may have heard this before but it's worth repeating: Your resume has only 10 to 15 seconds to grab a hiring manager's attention. If you assume that's true (we do), then you need to make every one of those seconds count. The best way to grab a hiring manager's attention is with a headline that effectively shouts your value, such as Award-Winning Sales Professional or Graphic Designer with Long List of Satisfied Clients. By replacing the category title Professional Summary or Summary of Qualifications (usually found right after your name and contact information at the top of your resume), the headline leads the reader into the highlights of your qualifications and helps you pass the 10-second test. This approach is especially helpful for experienced professionals who have established work credentials. I admit that I'm a bit biased to the headline approach because of the years I spent as a professional journalist. But there's something about large, bold type that sends the message: You're gonna want to know more, so read on! That approach has worked for decades at newsstands, especially tabloids that aim for the front-page shock value a large headline can offer. (One of my favorites is The New York Post's descriptionof a murder in 1983: Headless Body in Topless Bar) So, what's your headline? Here are three steps you can take to find it: 1.Figure out your strengths. What are the things you do well better than others who work in similar roles? What skills do you have that the employer wants most in the job? How have you gone above and beyond in your current and previous roles? Your answers may look something like this: I'm a sales professional with several years of experience in the consumer products industry. I know how to communicate with people, I know the importance of good customer relations, and always check in with my customers in the retail industry to make sure they were satisfied with what we delivered and that their customers were at least equally satisfied. I won several awards for consistently exceeding quarterly sales quotas and for leading all sales associates in winning repeat business. At my last job, they gave me new products to sell and my strategic approach with those new products was so effective that management asked me to conduct a seminar for new product sales for the entire sales division. The seminar was well received and earned me a commendation from the CEO. 2.Now, write your full professional summary. Once you answer those questions, convey that information in 75 words or less. Here's one based on the above example: Award-winning sales professional with several years of experience in the consumer products industry and strong track record of exceeding quarterly sales quotas. Highly effective at creating and maintaining good customer relations and generating repeat business. Proven ability to communicate sales tactics and strategies to other professionals through strong presentation skills. 3.Finally, write your headline. Take the editor's approach. What's the central theme of your story and what jumps out at the reader? Here are some examples and how each might be appropriate: Award-Winning Sales Professional This is one that can attract just about anyone looking for a sales professional. Experienced Consumer Products Sales Professional If the job is in the same industry, this is more specific and more effective than #1. Sales Pro Dedicated to Longstanding Customers This approach could be effective if the job ad stresses the importance of keeping customers. Sales Pro Keeps Customers Coming Back This is similar to #3, but the way it's worded can be attractive to a company that has ambitious growth plans and wants to build a strong base of customers. The most important thing to remember about using a headline is to address the employer's pain. If your headline hints that you understand that pain and will give them what they need to alleviate it (and your summary backs it up with more detail), you'll stand out. Put it right in front of their faces so they don't have to go searching for it.

Getting Referred is the way to Your Dream Job
Getting Referred is the way to Your Dream Job Getting Referred is the way to Your Dream Job This is a scary thought for the unconnected job seeker. I am not scaremongering though; just look at these statistics which show just how powerful a catalyst an employee referral is to the job search. Lets start with some stats from the almighty U.S. Department of Labor, which reveal that a massive 48 percent of jobs never actually make it to job boards and are advertised through the secret job market, known as word-of-mouth/employee referrals. Does this sound hard to be believe? Well another study by Jobvite suggests that employee referrals account for 44 percent of hires and a further study by CareerXRoads puts this figure at 28 percent â" and in both situations, referrals are the no. 1 route to a job, being more influential than the almighty job boards. So, as you can see, the most effective method for job seekers to identify and find job opportunities may not be through jobs boards, but by getting a referral from a friend. But, getting a referral does not only increase your chance of locating an opportunity, it also increases your chance of getting invited to interview and getting hired having landed an interview. Yes, research shows that employers favor candidates who have come recommended by a present employee (the more exalted the employee, the better). In particular, a Federal Reserve Bank of New York Study showed that candidates who had been referred were twice as likely to land an interview and had a 40 percent greater chance of being selected for the job than non-referred candidates. For me, its case closed. While you should in no way ignore job boards, it seems that the best way to actually get a job is to get referred by a friend; and, therefore, job seekers should be rebalancing their job search activity and focusing much these on finding referrals to point them to jobs that may not be advertised or to vouch for their application and boost their hire-ability. I hear you; thats easier said than done. Well, there are ways that people on the outside can find and exploit employee referrals and fast track into their employer of choice. I have outlined three tips on how to do this below: Focus on employers where you have inside contacts and ask them if they know of any openings and/or if they will vouch for your application. Prior to making a job application, check LinkedIn and Facebook to see if you have any contacts at the firm, and ask if you can include their name as a referral on your application. Network at industry events where you know that representatives from your favorite employers will be and pitch yourself to them and angle to see if there are any opportunities they can refer or recommend you too. Good luck with finding your next opportunity
